Word. Security guarantees from super powers can be reneged on and torn up. Ultimately, non-super-power countries are on their own. It is wise to be able to defend oneself against any potential aggressor.
What a great piece putting so many important issues into context and focus. It saddens me to relive the impacts of Obama’s foreign policy decisions with respect to the ME. I still wonder why the pivot to Iran and disregard to Israel and other allies. Simple political naïveté (his famous speech to the Mullahs about an unclenched first)? Hatred of “colonial” and monarchies due to his Marxist tendencies and the need to support “native” populations and liberate the man on the street? Something more sinister? Whatever the reasons, the lasting negative impacts are disastrous.
How in the hell can any thinking knowing person count this war and the general conflicts with China as being the final evidence that globalism is a terrible idea and should be canceled now. How can we have a one-world order when nations are still attempting expansion through military means?
All nations need to rely on their own defense and embrace a form of nationalism while working to keep up global trade.
I'm just gonna disagree. I applaud Zelensky and agree that being an armed neutral is probably a good solution for Ukraine, but:
1. Israel has never relied on American security assurances to survive. Israel won several wars against its neighbors without American support.
2. Despite of 'waning American hegemony' America has had successive presidents who all support Israel for...what? Nearly eight decades now?
Overall I firmly disagree with the thought that the US is an unreliable partner for Israel: we've been the most reliable partner for Israel for years.
The reason why Israel, unlike other western countries, is open to talk to both Putin & Ukraine is not because those other western countries aren't reliable but because Israel has taken a deliberately less hostile tact towards Moscow. Now, I do not blame Israel for this they have their own needs they need to address, but it's hardly something special about Israeli diplomacy that makes Jerusalem a potential location for talks, but the shear fact that Israel has forced itself to be far less hostile to Russia for their aggression than the West.
Ukraine is taking it for all of us! Over 20 years Putin reeked havoc in the world. meddling in everyone’s affairs KGB style! He ordered killings of his own and European citizens all over the world. His military is to blame for downing of civilian aircraft MH17 because he dangerously guides and supports separatists in eastern Ukraine for years now. He openly supported ultra nationalistic France’s Marie le Pen complain by injecting substantial contributions. In same time supporting Green movement. He openly employed European ex-elected officials at his state owned oil and gas companies with exuberant compensations. Divide and conquer! Play on the lowest moral qualities! This is the cheapest way in his mind, to influence the world instead of actually making Russia prosperous. Also Russia’s absolutely absurd permanent membership on UN security consul helps him together with China, block unwanted resolutions. Russia has one of the highest in the world rate of death among journalists! Putin is using current situation
of extremely weak leadership in the western world to his advantage.
Israel is the grown up here. Adults match rhetoric with actions. The West's loud virtue signalling is fooling no one. It has been sending $1B in support to Ukraine, while sending $40B to Russia in energy purchases since beginning of the war.
Not a question of whose side Israel is on. Maybe Bennett simply recognizes the practical necessity of Russian territorial security? Who had the brilliant idea of insisting that Ukraine join NATO?
Flipping terrifying to what’s happening to us here we have to get these Dems out today’s article by Abigail Shriver has honed in on the trans gendering of our daughters we becoming very sick I fear and how we even landed in this position is beyond understanding
Sounds just a wee insincere coming from a guy who, while loving to reference the Holocaust, continues to supply Iran with billions through his trade deals with those pesky mullahs who annoyingly won't stop threatening to wipe another sovereign nation off the map, not to mention the fact that much of those billions goes out to their terrorist proxies all around the world.
In 1948, months before what was considered an imminent Jewish State and an imminent invasion by neighboring countries such as Jordan and Egypt, the United States publicly announced their refusal to send military aid to Israel out of concern for antagonizing Middle Eastern countries during the Cold War.
Al Schwimmer had been a flight engineer of World War II, and he maintained many contacts after the war had ended He used his World War II experience and contacts to illegally smuggle surplus rifles, machine guns, bullets and fighter planes to Israel. These supplies mainly came from Czechoslovakia, where many of the arms had been used by the Nazis. They arrived in Israel just as British rule ended, and Schwimmer returned to the United States to buy and smuggle out B-17 bombers. His men participated in the ensuing war. They took control of the skies and formed the Israeli Air Force.
In 1950, after turning themselves in, Schwimmer and nine of his men were convicted for violating the US Neutrality Acts for smuggling arms into Israel. Although they avoided prison sentences, they were stripped of their civil rights and fined $10,000 each.
Schwimmer refused to ask for a pardon, believing that smuggling weapons to help create a Jewish State was the moral decision to make. In 2001 President Bill Clinton pardoned Schwimmer.
The film ends listing the fates of many of the pilots who had flown on the mission, the last of which is Schwimmer himself, who died in 2011.

Neutrality acts
In 1948, Charles Winters, Al Schwimmer and Herman Greenspun were convicted under the 1939 Act after smuggling B-17 Flying Fortress bombers from Florida to the nascent state of Israel during the 1948 Arab–Israeli War. All three received presidential pardons in subsequent decades.

Great article...very informative. Not enough credit given to Trump for Jerusalem transfer and relationship with Netanyahu.

Yip it’s bloody terrifying and they put Brandon as the frontman mind you watching him the other night with Obama he looked like the Backman

Not a fan of Zelenski or his hypocrisy.
The article is quite interesting, but the author greatly over-rates Israel's military self-reliance. It is dependent on USA equipment and funding.
Not a conspiracy theorist whatsoever, but I'm confident the Biden Gang's corruption is contributing to our waning hegemony.
I'm also pretty sure "the big guy" (Joe Biden's nom de guerre in Hunter's emails) will be revealed as a criminal before his term is up.
Graft on an unbelievable scale. Just watch.
I agree, but the retribution will never come, more's the pity
Excellent, informative column. Thank you for a beacon through the fog
Reference for my comment that made it a felony to help Israel and those convicted

The US government barely ever lifted a finger to help Israel militarily until after the '67 war, when De Gaulle reneged on his commitments.
Wow. Had no idea.
Excellent analysis
