I'm just now seeing this but am reminded that a friend many years before this article was written identified luxury beliefs as described in this article as "progressives or progressivism from afar."

Physical danger is part of the reason, no doubt. However, there are 'other' factors. Elites assume that schoolteachers will embrace 'progressive' views. They have big doubts about blue-collar workers. It is also true that being a schoolteacher requires a four year degree. Typical blue-collar jobs don't. The job of a schoolteacher isn't that volatile (with respect to the economy). Many blue-collar jobs are quite volatile.
