Donald Trump has gone from convict to the 47th president of the United States. It’s a comeback unlike any other in American history. How did it happen?
“Convict”? To call him that is to give credence to the absurd machinations the Democrats went through to ruin him, including the specious court cases whose theories were invented by ideologue prosecutors. To go after a former president the way the Dems did (with Biden’s DOJ and FBI leading the way) was a disgrace, and no one should call him a convict as a result of any of it. What he IS is a survivor. A man who wouldn’t give up in the face of the very undemocratic abuse of our justice system that was used to try to destroy him. I’m thrilled that the voters punished them for this, as well as for their disgraceful reversal of the secure border that Trump left them, their reversal of American dominance and independence re: fossil fuels, their irresponsible spending that resulted in horrendous inflation, and their waffling in support of Israel (and concomitant lukewarm reaction of the antisemitic campus demonstrations). Not to mention their intent to mess with our institutions by “packing” the Supreme Court, ending the filibuster, etc. just to accomplish their political goal of becoming all- powerful. And they’re ruining what has been a great meritocracy with their DEI, CRT, Trans-rights ideologies that not only fail to recognize excellence, but also reward mediocrity based solely on political correctness. No… the Democrat party doesn’t even resemble its former self, and the many famous converts to the Republican Party (among them Tulsi Gabbard and Elon Musk) are further evidence of that. Take note. Americans have spoken. As Ron DeSantis has said: “This is where woke goes to die”. Amen to that.
So, unlike 2020, there doesn't appear to have been any "mysterious events" in the middle of the night. I'm sure part of that was that Republicans knew what to look for beforehand this time. But I also wonder if this time the Democrat operatives didn't feel like Harris was worth the effort. Perhaps even they abhor the cackle.
"'J.D. Vance is one of the most pernicious and pathetic figures in American politics and culture.' —Nick Gillespie"
What a nasty thing to say about someone, but it doesn't surprise me as coming from the editor-at-large of Popular Mechanics Magazine. Go back to Church, Nick.
Just flipping through the various media pages and see CNN’s headline “TRUMP RETAKES POWER”. WTF? It’s like they’re commenting on a coup in South America or a new Muslim terrorist organization taking over Lebanon. It is amazing to me that such media organizations can’t allow themselves to acknowledge that the American people VOTED in a Democratic election and GRANTED Trump the privilege to represent them for the next 4 years.
Well the Democrats will have to give up on packing the Supreme Court but my guess is that The View will be packed with a soon to be unemployed politician.
Boy, was I wrong. The immediate lead-up to Election Day built a sense of inevitability for Harris. The voter interviews in Pennsylvania with three for Harris, one for Trump; the closing 24/7 emphasis on women, women bringing their daughters, abortion everywhere, older women. The polls, the Iowa poll. Someone I know called it psyops. I'm not as sanguine that it would have been okay either way, that there was no risk. I'm with Musk on this. Had Harris won and the filibuster been lifted, there may well have been a cascade of irrevocable changes effectively leading to a uniparty, with Puerto Rico already primed to become the next state let alone what could have happened with SCOTUS. It wouldn't have been the last election. It would have been the last election that mattered. See California. America worked. Black men and Latinos joined in. The voters stepped in and in fact did execute that k- turn in the middle of the Jersey Turnpike, in the nick of time. America worked.
Wow, maybe Nick Gillespie is the most pernicious, pathetic character in America, whoever he is.
As a right leaning moderate I can tell you that The Free Press got me through this election cycle by providing the closest thing to even handed reporting (with a good sense of humor and irony) available in the national press. Bari, et al, I’d like to remain a subscriber so please continue presenting a variety of thoughtful ((and sometimes funny) points of view and resist the temptation to become the NYT Light.
Guess the word “rigged” can be retired now that the election went the Republican’s way. Say what you want about woke and DEI or whatever thought crimes you want to accuse the left of but Democrats care enough about democracy and honoring our institutions not to spin some made up story about the election being stolen.
My wise husband called this election the moment that Kamala Harris was foisted onto the presidential ticket by a crass elite group of self-aggrandizing people. We live part time in the SF Bay Area and were born in Oakland, CA. We watched SF deteriorate and Harris was part of that denigration. She is a vacuous woman and as a woman, I am SO GLAD she will not be the first woman president. Thank you to all of you amazing commenters here for keeping me sane, despite TFP's effort to elect her. The editors have some soul searching to do too! And in my other Republican state, MONTANA, Thank you all! Fishing this year will be even sweeter.
I think what makes me most happy this morning is that the legacy media is not nearly as strong as it used to be. The majority of American voters have shown they no longer believe their BS.

AND Biden should pardon Trump

Like Hilary Clinton, Harris got too far into her cups on election to give a speech to her supporters or to call her opponent with a concession.

Agreed. New York Times headline in the morning newsletter: “Trump Storms to Power”. Evoking the image of stormtroopers…

Josie Savodnik for the win!👊👏🏻

As a left-leaning moderate, I share your appreciation of The Free Press.
Follow Argentines Milei and start cutting departments!!

My guess is nobody is more relieved she didn’t win than Kamala.
Any rioting yet? I had been promised riots everywhere if Trump won. There may be some somewhere or there may be some in the works.

Yeah...when you control the media, celebrities, and much of the tech sector and STILL lose, it really does say something.
