I think the real question and story is why Harris isn’t beating Trump like a drum. Numerous criminal indictments, felony convictions, and lawsuits have not swept him from the American political stage. In fact, many argue convincingly that they have strengthened his standing with traditional supporters and many independents. Harris gave her party a rare reset with a more engaging, energetic, and relatively youthful candidate who checks so many boxes dear to hearts of many Americans. And yet she only occasionally pops her head consistently above the 50% polling parapet. This is my 16th presidential election in living memory. I’ve often found myself succumbing to the temptation that seems to have captured Oliver, of mentally rewriting the speeches or strategic plans of candidates to correct their obvious, to us at least, missteps. But little of this ultimately matters, I think. If people like what you’re selling, they’ll buy it. Otherwise, no. And to that point, Harris has the steeper uphill climb, and it’s why she can’t seem to close the deal against such a burden-laden candidate. That’s Trump’s biggest advantage.
