I'm a big Free Press/ Bari fan, but Rupa Subramanya has consistently disappointed me with bizarre framing of Canadian issues and disingenuous arguments. I'm not a fan of Bill C-11, but more because of it's censorship over the vague term "misinformation". The culture/crtc argument she's pushing here is wildly inaccurate and not helpful in discussing the bill's problems.

The Bieber argument doesn't hold up because she's saying people put "thumbs down" for content the algorithm recommends...but that just sounds like a shitty algorithm. She presents the bill as lacking any clarity by asking "how will this new bill list someone like The Weeknd who was born in Toronto but lives in LA? Or Bryan Adam's who lives in Europe?", even though the CRTC has ruled on this consistently for over 35 years, classifying Adam's, Neil Young, and Shania Twain as Canadian artists even if they don't live here. Says Quebecor is faithful to the Liberal Party, when there's nothing Quebecor would like more than the dissolution of all federal standards. Says no one wants to defend it to her, but doesn't sound like she genuinely tried to speak to people in favour of the bill. Then she criticizes Trudeau for not meeting with the truckers?! What message would that have sent to all of Canada if Trudeau met with childish role-playing revolutionaries. This bill really needs to be critiqued and debated in the media, but this is a mischaracterization of the issue at hand.
