A ban could have a two-pronged effect, at least in my fevered imagination: it would allow the PRC leadership to accuse the US government of exactly the same sort of heavy-handed censorship that we all know the PRC is guilty of, giving them a moral win; and the ban would stoke the appetites of young Americans who would suddenly view TikTok usage as a tantalizing rebellion. Obfuscation VPN usage will go through the roof as young people tune into a TikTok that will no longer pretend to be benign, and they will have a captive and eager audience.
