"it’s fair to say Trump and his supporters have a point when they complain about a politicized, two-tiered justice system." The understatement of the year?

I thought your mention of a Time cover story about Harris was intended as farce. Really. I didn't believe it until I did an internet search that confirmed it.

Apparently you need an Ivy education to count. Let's see, Harvard, Penn, Cornell, Columbia. That's 4, count em, 4 Ivy league presidents who resigned. All women, btw.

Ollie, calling Kamala's evasions, changing of the truth, attempting to change history, and her misinformation are not omissions, they are lies. She and the DNC are liars. You, as a journalist should be dedicated to telling the truth. We all understand Trumps exaggerations are lies, they don't much bother me because they are about things that don't really matter (ie: more cross than MLK had, etc). But changing her title...Border Czar, what Border Czar? That was never my title or purview. Or Joe Biden is on top of everything one week and the next week he's incapable. You need to hold yourself and Kamala to a higher standard Ollie. Remember the 8th Commandment, Ollie, "You shall not bear false testimony."

Expand full comment

Yes, she and the DNC are liars. But don't you think that Kamala's evasions are more than just her personal choice? Biden's health issue was hiding in plain sight for years while being ignored by everybody on the Democratic side, until they decided to make it public so they could kick him out. Democrat messaging is air tight.

The so-called Border Czar appointment was political theater from the start, designed to give the country the impression that Biden cared about an issue that he intended to ignore as long as possible, and did. The damage control around Kamala's supposed appointment became necessary when Biden was shown the door and the DNC needed to invent an explanation for Kamala's non-action at the border. She said what she was told to say: she was never the Border Czar. And the media backed her up, just like they were told.

You're right that Ollie is a lousy journalist, but there again, he's doing what he's told. If Bari didn't approve of his approach, he wouldn't be working here anymore.

When I subscribed to TFP, I hoped for something different in a news organization, but lately I find TFP disheartening because of articles like Ollie's. I'm rethinking my subscription.

I understand where you're coming from. So far I'm still on the fence, because sometimes the coverage is excellent, especially on the trans issue. Also I know that I was better educated on certain controversial events than my progressive friends and family, for instance the Kyle Rittenhouse case and the Central Park Karen brouhaha. Sometimes the reporting here really is neutral, but as you point out, not always, and these days it matters more than ever.

Nice little generalization smear, Oliver with "Trump's BS" line. Very important to never challenge anything specific.

Expand full comment

If Kamala has a plan to improve America, why hasn't she proposed it during the three and a half years that she's been Vice President? Her ads here in Arizona talk about securing the border, but she's had years to address the issue without doing anything of note.

They don’t need Biden or the Biden crime family anymore. They will hang them out to dry. The Democrat cabal is pure evil.

I’m 56, I don’t feel old at all. But, I am being made to feel old by encroaching cuteness. I love the humor of TGIF etc. However, you shouldn’t start your newsletter’s so cutesy - chatty yes. I guess you are in a pickle about how to ‘appeal’ to a broader (younger) audience. I’m just saying, it was the ‘millennial’ influence that was horrible at the NYT., and it caused the flight from public radio.

Fake news Wiseman at it again. Harris does exaggerate her identity to win friends and influence people. She did it recently in Georgia with her new southern accent.

Karma karma karma karma chameleon.

But what he misses is the strategy behind the comment. The seed of doubt that gets planted.

Oliver!

Is this ALL you’ve got about folks lying on the trail? I mean c’mon, the Trump examples are not really lies, are they? Crowd sizes, Biden coming back, AI fakes, …don’t these examples seem more like just plain delusions shared openly, willingly? If Trump’s pattern holds they may become lies when he denies later that he ever said them.

Is not the central animating force of Trump’s campaign the Big Lie…you know the one where he’s convinced himself and millions of others, without evidence, that the 2020 election was stolen?

And that “almost sinister” Harris misinformation campaign consisting of buying ads saying nice things about her own candidacy, complete with disclaimers!

Love this “both sides” do it journalism.

I believe the election was fraudulent. Period. And so do millions of others.

Mistakenly, wrongly, without evidence, litigated, audited.

Trump BELIEVES the election was stolen. So do many others. It's not been proven, but since when is a belief a lie?

Trump exaggerates the crowd size, but have you personally done a head count as you seem so sure of this being a lie? Prove he's not lying, then prove why we should care.

Can you prove Harris is not using AI, and why should anyone care?

Why don't you tell us why we should have a wealth tax, and government provided health care?

Tell us why you support an open border leading to increased, horrific crime?

You want more wars around the globe? How many were started under Trump?

Explain the Biden crime cover up, laptop, selling access, etc. Want me to go on?

“Biden crime cover up, laptop, selling access etc.”

The R’s have controlled the House and two powerful investigative committees(Oversight and Judiciary) for two years. What do they have to show for it? Bluster and whining with little if no evidence.

Great points. One thought I would have is why we should have government-provided heal care. Because every other industrialized nation has considerably better access — and outcomes — than we do.

No they do not. People who can afford it purchase additional insurance. Do you ever wonder why they come to the US for their care?

Name one enterprise the government runs that is more efficient than private sector?

The DMV? The Post Office? How many road workers does it take to fill a pothole?

You really want the government in charge of the most important service to you and your family? Think hard before you answer.......

Expand full comment

Too easy. Medicare. It’s unquestionably better than the dreck we get from parasites like United Health Care, Aetna, etc.

Remember the ‘09 ACA process? A lady told Rep Barney Franks in a town hall to “keep your damn government hands off my Medicare!” She loved her health care coverage though she was a bit confused whence it came.

Expand full comment

How many people would choose Medicare if it wasn't forced on us?

And how much fraud is involved? You think government is the answer to every issue....it's they who turn it into a problem. If Medicare is so wonderful, how come 220M people have private insurance.

You should go away Butt.....you're real bad news.

Expand full comment

The fact that you think I’m bad news is more than a little way down my priority list. Commenters who disagree with you should go away? Are you auditioning for a role with the Harris administration?

When did I claim government is the answer to everything? That’s delusional—on the part of anyone thinking it, and on your part for claiming I think that.

Do you work for a health insurance company? Or own a lot of health insurance stock?

Medicare is only for the elderly. Most or many of your 220 million aren’t eligible for Medicare. I really hope you’re not learning this for the first time.

Do you ever re-read your comments before hitting Post? May want to consider that, it will probably help prevent you from saying things like 220 million have private insurance. Which is completely irrelevant if they aren’t eligible for Medicare.

Guess what? Medicare IS NOT FREE and IT DOES NOT COVER 100%. I am retired on Medicare and it cost me over $450 every month just for myself. What do you think it’s going to cost to cover a family? And who is going to pay for it?

Expand full comment

Not much of value is free. Medicare cost you 1.45% of every dollar you earn. Plus the additional fees once on it. That’s still a shitload better than letting citizens fend for themselves if they aren’t lucky enough to have it through work. I’m retired and not yet eligible for Medicare. $450 per month? I know a couple hundred million Americans who would take that deal. I’m retired but not yet Medicare eligible. I pay a hell of a lot more than that for our coverage.

Funny how times change so quickly. I mean what actually changed? Kamala all of sudden became a great pick? Time did a puff piece on Kamala recently, when just Jan 30, 2024, Time was calling for Biden to choose a new VP with an article titled: Biden Owes the Country a New Vice President

https://time.com/6589518/joe-biden-owes-the-country-new-vice-president/

This brings me to the matter of Biden’s vice-presidential choice. Kamala Harris, the current holder of the post, shares with Henry Wallace progressive values and a proclivity to verbal infelicities. There are no indications that she would be soft on Russia or otherwise swerve—as Donald Trump has—from mainstream American foreign-policy tenets. But neither are there indications that she has developed, over her three years in the White House, any strong, recognizable convictions on America’s role in the world, or how Washington should exercise global leadership. Equally importantly, she has struggled mightily to move the public on any aspect of policy, even those policies—such as civil rights and immigration—on which she has taken an active interest or prominent role. While Republicans, most notably Donald Trump, have leveled, and will continue to level, ad hominem attacks and unsubstantiated charges against Harris, they will be amply justified in making her presence on the ticket a major campaign issue.

The American vice president has only two important constitutional roles: to break tie votes in the Senate, and to sit on presidential death watch. This latter task will be more important under a second Biden presidency than it has been at any time since FDR’s fourth term. Should Biden be re-elected, there is a one in three chance of his vice president taking his job before January 2029. And roughly half the electorate thinks that Harris is not up to the demands of that job.

Someone has to talk me off the ledge.

Sadly, I see Kamala winning this election. Followed shortly by some BS executive order - where she grants amnesty and voter ID’s to all illegal immigrants - thereby guaranteeing a one-party (Dem) stranglehold for the next several decades, or at least until this country is taken over by an ever-growing Muslim majority.

On the "politicized, two-tiered justice system", it may be that Trump has been successfully evading any consequences from his ripping off consumers, mob ties in NYC R/E dealings, bankruptcies etc. that prosecutors were willing to go with little-used tactics that would only used infrequently on the average citizen/politician. Calling it politicized may be the easy way to explain the differentiated treatment without considering the subject's history. In this case, the subject more than earned his differentiated treatment and whines that he is being politically targeted. Another of many examples of gaslighting his supporters.
