Re: What we’re reading #5. Apparently the “we” who are reading did not read the article linked in its entirety. The “we” in “Are we living in a time of unparalleled wealth inequality? No, says economist Daniel Waldenström, who argues the orthodoxy on the subject is all wrong.“ does not really apply to the US, where inequality has been trending up for decades but has not yet reached early 20th century levels. See figure 4. We should be able to hold three ideas in our head at the same time: 1) equality of wealth is not a realistic or desirable goal in a free, democratic society, 2) equality of opportunity desirable, and 3) at some point, concentration of wealth and its influence on political power conflicts with #2. Put another way, a democracy that values and rewards merit is good. A meritocracy in which wealth, perhaps initially gained through merit, is used to redefine merit and shape how it is rewarded, can weaken a democracy, become much like an aristocracy, and enable the rise of populist autocrats.

"“ceasefire, anti-war, pro-peace narrative.” To paraphrase Dershowitz "if an alien ship would land on earth and begin asking about what's going on they would get the impression that the current Gaza War was started by Israel". Apparently, the useful idiots who are parroting these slogans weren't born before Oct. 7, because if they had been they'd know that 1) there was a ceasefire between Gaza and Israel for the last few years, 2) the Hamas attacked Israel and up till now has refused any offers of a ceasefire, but rather demanded that Israel withdraw from Gaza without getting its hostages freed and allow the Hamas to reassert control in Gaza 3) rather than "pro-peace" the Hamas has promised to repeat the attacks of Oct 7, "over and over again until Israel is destroyed and all the Jews completely leave the whole area of Israel. I could never have imagined such fervor divorced from any reality or facts.

When the tribe comes for you: "please have mercy, please spare my children... [realizing this pagan tribe has zero humanity, now screaming in terror] ...but the NUANCE!"

yes, what an utter lack of humility to life experience of the elders, those of us with no NUANCE!

If Carrie Adams disagrees with her boss, she should resign. Why work for someone who is so out of touch with her opinions.

Hoping to change Fetterman

Someone with that much nuance can probably justify taking the paycheck but she certainly does not have the principles of her boss.

Fetterman continues to completely surprise me.

Item 4. in Ten Stories We're Reading is a worthy read on who I think is one of the most interesting people in the world currently, Alex Karp of Palantir. Absolutely dances to the beat of his own drum. As CEO of publicly traded Palantir Technologies, he is the kind of unique person who can either make you a fortune or completely blow up. Right now I’d say he and his company are on their way to greatness.

What was the first Front Page or other FP article to mention Kamala Harris economic plan and “price gouging”, price controls, and the $25,000 down payment subsidy? Have I missed it?

Reading that grumpy economist list was delight. It seems like there's a party that just doesn't quite trust the science...

grumpy is a hardcore libertarian. The US is a long way from ever electing a libertarian. Argentina just did it, so I suppose anything is possible. But, I'm no holding my breath.

"[Carrie Adams] wanted to make clear that she doesn’t agree with her boss on Israel and Gaza.... I have a sense that his international views are a lot less nuanced than my generation'

Oh, she speaks for her generation, and she and the ignorant useful idiots who do make an alarmingly large portion of her generation have "more nuanced view of the region". Except that in many cases, they would not be able to find this region on the map while they march with islamists and chant antisemitics slogans being firmly convinced in their moral superiority.

I'm guessing that if you asked, about 98% of the protesters could not name the river or the sea they are referring to when they chant "From the river to the sea".

Nor would they understand that this particular chant is a call to genocide.

Good on Carrie Adams, proudly ignorant and stupid.

Fetterman needs to fire Carrie Adams immediately and with great flourish. Aides cannot be allowed to stab their principals publicly and get away with it. And she's so wrong on the facts that is a bonus for the firing.

Yeah, I would have accepted her resignation right there on the same call. But, maybe he encouraged his staff to tell him if they do not like his positions? Unclear from the story.
