"Currency Comptroller, Saule Omarova. I objected to the fact that Republican Sen. John Kennedy was using her childhood"
Not her childhood but her undergrad thesis at Moscow State University titled "Karl Marx and and the Theory of Revolution in Das Kapital", which she refuses to provide to the Senate committee evaluating her suitability.
Refusing to provide data on her (adult) past is egregious, regardless of whether one thinks those facts are positive, negative or irrelevant.
Omarova was not just a member of the VLKSM (which everyone was a member off) she was an active and dedicAted member as no other way she would have received Lenin’s prize. I was also surprised that no one investigated on how she came to the US in 1991 when was not possible
Flash retail theft mobs and looters are metastasizing. Local Best Buy's here in MN got hit on Friday in the suburbs of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Strangely there has been a lack of viral video or even surveillance footage being released and as of now, no arrests or suspects named.
I've enjoyed and looked forward Bari's writings since she was on Megyn Kelly's podcast early this year. And now your TGIF posts are icing on the cake. Y'all make a great team. I consider myself a conservative (from the future home of the University of Austin) and rarely disagree with what Bari (or you, so far) writes. Scary. My sincere thanks to both of you for your common sense writing.
Ms. Bowles, I love this roundup. Consider this feedback to you and 'management'. Your subtile sarcasm is food for the soul. I need to find that Woman's March apology.
The NYT has some of the weirdest parenting articles. Some of them are good for a laugh. I feel sorry for new parents who follow such advice, they're miserable and so are their kids.
I think standardized tests have a place in assessment, but a lot of them have gotten strange in their desire to show "high level thinking". The SAT has become a test of your dedication and ability to pay for College Board test prep. I think it would be best to use a basket of criteria for admission. Legacy points is a big factor in admission that should be questioned as well if your goal is to broaden your student population.
I know I'm a far outlier, but what concerns me about the Kyle Rittenhouse and Ahmed Aubrey cases is vigilante justice. If there weren't guns involved for "policing" by private citizens, there would be black eyes, broken noses and split lips instead of dead people. I believe in law enforcement and criminal justice by state personnel. The police, and National Guard if need be, should be in charge of law enforcement, not private citizens.
We have democracy and if the citizens of a state or city don't like the state of their law enforcement they can vote out their civic leaders. It took a long time, but our county finally decided that having a few more cops was worth paying for. New Yorkers didn't vote for the Progressive Democrats, they voted for the moderate former law enforcement Democrat.
Welllllll, in the case of Kyle rittenhouse, Kyle would be dead. Probably with black eyes, and broken bones and a broken neck from the skateboard beating him to death. It’s good he survived. And the raping criminal that tried to kill him? Well women everywhere will be safer.
I lived in San Francisco's Union Square area in the 80s and 90s, the only crime I ever read about was a laughably memorable incident in which one hapless thief held up a jewelry store and escaped with priceless looking diamonds and gems. As it turned out, all the stones in that store were cubic zirconia.
But the recent flash mobs of dozens of thieves are no laughing matter. Who wants to risk a trip to Macy's or Bloomingdale's when dangerous criminals are on the loose? The city's mayor needs to do much more than just make it a little harder to park near the stores. And San Francisco needs to ax its woke and leftist district attorney, Chesa Bouin, the son of 60's radicals from the Weather Underground.
I don’t know if it’s qualified immunity or something else but we need to pass laws that hold people accountable when they take public office and then systematically don’t enforce the law.
Chesa Boudin should get the death penalty in my opinion. He’s killing people. There is zero doubt that he is causing deaths on purpose. He’s an accomplice.
The guy who filmed Ahmed Arbery’s killing, and who totally did not kill him, was charged with murder. There needs to be a way to deal with Chesa Boudin.
This is a marvelous feature and getting better each week. I was not sure I would like it, but it is pithy, calls a spade a spade, and (amazingly in today's world) already has a case where Nellie admits to being misguided. We are all often there, but few seem to be willing/able to admit it any more. Refreshing and becoming among the most readable events each week. Many thanks.
Thanks Bari. You're right about Matt T and Hitchens. Since you went on Substack I've signed up for 4 or 5 other Substackers as well. There's so much good journalism on line now if you know where to look. I cancelled cable this year and put the money I saved into you and other good J's. Guess what? I don't always agree with you/them; but if I don't have a good counter argument I just assume I'm full of you know what. Thanks for abandoning the MSM ship. It's sinking and the good journalists are leaving.
I have occasional nit pics. But Nellie, Bari and crew ... you do awesome work. Thanks for all you do.
If progressives are deciding not to have babies, that’s a good thing, right??

The Babylon Bee did a nice satire on “caused by an SUV. It is a premier site for satire

Another well written update! Thank you! And thank you for considering your readers input.

Yes I like these summaries of the news.
