Just speculating here but what are the chances an avowed anit-Putin fanatic believes all the Russia conspiracy hoaxes against Trump, including ongoing Dem assertions that Trump is still cozy with Putin, assembles all of this and find a new mission (eliminate Trump to disempower Putin) to be obsessed with? Just thinking out loud...

"but I think people thought ‘Who cares, he’s supporting the right cause,’ ” says Tanya."

This is a very dangerous mindset - to pretend a guy is OK/Brad Pitt because one likes his cause. The guy was clearly a radical and not OK.

It is also dangerous to vilify those who want to vote for Donald Trump for his policies and claim Trump is "deranged/unhinged/a Threat to Democracy". I wanted to share this parody video:

"RFK Jr. VP Candidate Nicole Shanahan Releases ‘The MAGA People’ Parody Video"

https://www.dailywire.com/news/rfk-jr-vp-candidate-nicole-shanahan-releases-the-maga-people-parody-video

"“Across the Atlantic, in the North American country of the United States lays a fascinating and often misunderstood collective,” the narrator begins. “From its Northeastern cities to its Midwestern towns to its expansive West, this courageous group of individuals are most notably known for their unwavering patriotism. Join us as we explore the fascinating world of the MAGA People.”

“As we embarked on our journey, we were judicious in taking all necessary precautions,” the video continues. “Our media had warned us that these were a vicious, radical, and even deplorable people.”"

...

"“As they strive to uphold the peace and harmony throughout their communities, the MAGA people are insistent on protecting their borders,” the video continues. “However, they are not inherently confrontational as they advocate for ending the wars and military presence abroad. Further observations reveal that MAGA people come from all walks of life, including farmers and ranchers, family-owned businesses, entrepreneurs, health advocates, blue-collar workers, and military servicemen.”"

...

It says the MAGA people meet and join with the MAHA people (Make America Health Again). :-) :-)

"but I think people thought ‘Who cares, he’s supporting the right cause,’ ” says Tanya."

You've just described a lot of Trump/Republican voters as well, from the point of view, of well, many. For example, who cares if Trump lied about losing an election and instigated a riot, targeting his own VP for not breaking the law for him, gas prices were low under Trump (thanks to the pandemic lockdowns lol), and I like his tax cuts (thank Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell for winning their majorities and architecting the actual legislation... oh never mind, those are both two of some of the most hated "RINO's" in MAGA-world these days!), etc so what are some "mean Tweets" (ignoring of course objection to Trump's conduct and rhetoric is about a lot more than his juvenile Tweets). Who cares if Trump and Vance deliberately spread a malicious lie about Haitian immigrants murdering and eating beloved pets - it's just important they got the media finally talking about "immigration" (which, I guess if you avoid all mainstream media as a rule, you could be under the impression this is a never-before-been-reported-on topic, otherwise there have been lots and lots of in depth reporting about the trials and stresses of immigration/migration in various locations, including Springfield had a piece in NY Times several weeks before Vance's lies on Twitter about it).

"instigated a riot" - riiiiight - and watchout for Trump's sub machine gun - just like the would-be assassin.

I think the Cheneys and the Bushes don't want to accept that the Republican party has moved beyond them. I'd agree with that. I am a recent Republican - former Independent - who likes having Tulsi Gabbard, JD Vance, Vivek Ramaswamy, RFK, Jr. and Elon Musk on the team. The Democrats gained a singer. Should we hold our breath for a Ministry of Song?

Open Borders and illegal immigration are a major problem hurting cities and was not getting enough attention, IMO. Besides, people are having lots of fun with the cat memes.

I think we can agree the Republican Party has "moved on", I'll leave you to your "fun" and team sports (seriously, consider touching some grass at some point if that's your idea of "fun" though!).

Again, if you actually consumed any mainstream media even casually at all, you would know that immigration/migration strains and stresses has been heavily covered for well over the past several years under the Biden Administration, and usually is heavily critical of the Administration's handling of the border and migration. JD Vance didn't do shit but make his boss look "weird" on a national debate stage in front of millions of independent voters who are not heavy into online right wing memes and discourse - and on one of the topics that Trump is actually in positive territory on where he could have instead made some more effective points instead of getting pwned into letting go of that bit of verbal diarrhea ;p Instead he has let loose the worst of the Right's "discourse" around immigration into normie circles, and while I'm betting that normie voters want some border reform and wanted it yesterday, what they might dislike even worse are images of KKK fliers and Neo Nazi figures circulating around a town, calling in bomb threats to schools and hospitals over, and other associated "masks off" moments where these folks are happiily linking JD Vance and Trump to their presence and interestingly doesn't seem to be getting much of any pushback from the latter, so good luck with that!

Anyway, back to the "fun memes" :D

" I'll leave you to your "fun" and team sports" I don't understand what that means.

"Again, if you actually consumed any mainstream media even casually at all"

I've seen it. It is bad - including the WSJ.

"JD Vance didn't do shit but make his boss look "weird"" Walz is majorly weird - they just accuse the opposing side of what they are/do.

" KKK fliers and Neo Nazi figures circulating around a town, calling in bomb threats to schools and hospitals" - that is bad. Who is doing it? I am pretty cynical after our summer of Antifa burning love and "fine people" hoaxes.

Anyhow, the cat memes are great fun & winning/saving the country could even come down to them :)

The MAGA People. Loved It.

An Actual Thought occurred to me (ALWAYS A scary thing :))

Donald Trump is a Giant Middle Finger to The Establishment. A Lot of Trump supporters don't know much about his Policies. They do know 2 things 1. When he was President things were pretty good, 2. The Powers That Be Hate Him, Lie about Him. So when you see a Trump 2024 sign, or a MAGA hat, what that really is, is a Giant F.U.

I think it is a mix. There's the variety you describe for sure.

There are also those worried about censorship and the border and the economy, endless wars (as opposed to negotiated peace where a good deal is made),

There are those concerned about the radicals who think the US Constitution is just some old rag.

There are parents angry about "gender" in education, pharma, "medicine", sports, Title IX, uh - where isn't it?

And, there are the "all of the aboves".

I don't think we will ever get beyond the gender cult unless our medical organizations (who ignore the Cass Review) and the pharmaceutical industry are held to account. These things won't happen if we have even more censorship. In fact, without respect for Free Speech we have nothing.

"The MAGA People" is a great video, isn't it? Have you seen Nicole Shanahan's parody video of pharmaceutical ads warning voters about "Trump Derangement Syndrome"?

I am not promoting Nicole Shanahan so that anyone votes for a 3rd party. I agree with you.

But, I think she produced a couple of brilliant videos in support of the Trump campaign: The Maga People which is made in the manner of a nature video and the second one I provided which is made like a pharma ad.

So the left is tired of these assassination attempts and want Trump to tone down his rhetoric, does this make any sense ? Of course politics makes little sense but this one is really crazy ! So the logic to this is Trump is making the left say bad things about him like comparing him to Hitler, or saying he will destroy democratize , because Trump is saying crazy shit . This kind of logic is self fulfilling , and justifies almost anything thing said (Or done because of) , but OK it seems to define what the left is today ? Is this a good thing ?

The logic of it is really broke, with thus logic you validate all the bad claims you make against a person (or group) that may cause groups or people to go out an act on thus claims ! This is just insane , but they are saying "it's not my fault" because he said X and it made me counter with Y . It justify's nothing but there hate so they can feel better , but it's still just raw hate that causes these acts .

I'm sure Ukraine could have used a good volunteer with a good head and a good shot.

The fact that he didn't stick around in Ukraine means he's either a big talker or the Ukranian army didn't want him, probably because he's got multiple screws loose. Or the country wouldn't let him in/stay with his rap sheet.

The attention seeking assassin seems to stay with us, and as politicians become more famous, the premium for killing them goes up. John Wilkes Booth could have lived out his nice life in peace, but he couldn't resist killing the president he blamed for Southern defeat. Lee Harvey Oswald, even if he was acting in concert with others, was an attention seeking political creature before he found out the president would ride right past his place of employment. Assassination is a way for the otherwise odd and incapable to have an outsized impact on history. Gavrilo Princip was a teenage nobody who set off World War 1 by killing a visiting dignitary to his town, and we are still living with the consequences. Other than better protection for political figures, it would helpful if politics had less influence on our lives, and politicians weren't show business people. It would also be helpful if assassins, like mass shooters, didn't become famous. There is a bronze statute of Princip in Serbia, and here, plenty of people who openly call for Trump's defeat by any means, so his killer will be a hero to many. As of yet, we've not seen an assassination of a school board member, but if we keep pushing the culture further and further away from the norms, that, too, will become a popular phenomenon. Our toxic politics are summoning the demons. Assassinations are a prelude to a wider war.

So politicians should hide in there basement and not talk to reporters or give any hints on where they stand on policy's that they will vote for ? OK , I get it what the Dems do ?

Expand full comment

Harris, Biden, Pelosi are responsible to a significant degree for these attacks on Trump. The constant statements that he is a threat to democracy may be vote winners but they are also a license to attack Trump.

Meanwhile the Democrats force a President out of power in a coup and nominate a new candidate who has never won a primary. What was that they said about a ‘threat to democracy’?

Just read that these anti-Trump tactics may not even be vote-winners!

There is no evidence that either one of the two lunatics who tried to shoot Trump were in any way people concerned about threats to democracy. They seem to be your run-of-the-mill crazies who, sadly, in America are too easily able to get access to high powered deadly weapons.

And to the point about Harris not winning a primary being "a threat to democracy" - 1) she is on the ticket with Biden as his VP. People voted for her to step in if Biden is unable to execute his duties or steps down, which is what she did. And 2) even if that were not the case, there is NO democracy in a primary - this is simply a party process by which it selects a candidate. The "democracy" part happens on November 5th.

Expand full comment

Lunatics are lunatics. Elected representatives are supposed to sustain the principles of democratic principles, process and respect for fellow citizens at all times. Not content with undermining their own President, these crooks then put a dummy up for election as President without contest or party consultation and encouraged lunatics to attack her only rival for that job. If you think that is all democratic behavior you are well at home in the Democratic Party.

Expand full comment

No democracy in a primary? Certainly not these days in the Democratic Party. Ask Bernie or RFK Jr. But used to be the voters chose the candidate, not party bosses.

Expand full comment

Your concern trolling on behalf of Democratic primary voters noted (who are apparently not that upset about the change to the ticket it seems), George T is correct. There are no requirements that parties hold voting based primaries to select their candidates from, this actually has been a relatively recent event since I think Nixon-McGovern (?). Prior to both political parties selected their nominees in the old "smoke filled rooms". There is certainly no Constitutional requirement that political parties select their nominees through an open voting primary process, the vehicle and process of how a nominee is selected is entirely up to the poltical parties.

Bari actually had a pretty good podcast about this on her "Honestly" with Yuval Levin (who is in favor of returning to the "smoke filled rooms").

The idea that candidates should be kicked off ballots and other documented Democratic Party maneuvers—in a party claiming to be preserving democracy—is ridiculous, think and defend what you will. I had the same thought, but my husband helpfully pointed out it's probably not magic to assume "Trump is golfing" on any given day, and if the would-be assassin just had the public information that Trump was in Florida there was probably a better than zero chance that's where he would be, especially on a weekend. To my knowledge, there's only a few Trump owned golf resorts in Florida (given that Trump exclusively golfs at his own resorts that makes narrowing down "which one" a much smaller list), so my guess is this someone who has observed Trump's patterns and movements (again, not earth shaking effort if Trump is in a given state with a Trump owned golf course) - and if Trump was in Mar a Lago/Palm Beach area then one of those local (if not the only) local golf courses would have been the one he would be at. Also, probably watching for an array of Secret Service vehicles and official looking vehicle traffic in the area likely pointed out Trump's intended wereabouts...
