As it happens, the Prime Minister of Israel is delivering a speech to Congress today, while Kamala Harris is delivering a speech to a sorority. Kamala is supposed to be, from the perspective of tv, sitting right behind the Prime Minister as he delivers the speech. The disjunction of priorities would baffle if it were not for our streets having been turned into a parallel of 1930’s Germany. As the Jews of 1930’s Germany must have thought, “It cannot happen here.” Yet here we are. Once again. Our recent catastrophe, the 9/11 fiery holocaust, was the first blow of “Death to America.” The Hamas demonstrators at that very site of the attack espoused thousands of October 7’s … and “Death to America.” Once again. In the long march of Iran, and their ilk, to eradicate The Great Satan, America, Israel is only a stepping stone. It became fashionable in Democratic circles to attack the Prime Minister of Israel, following Biden and Schumer calling for the deposition of the Prime Minister. Previously, Senator Schumer eloquently eviscerated anti-semitism in his November 29 Senate speech in defense of Israel … except for one point: he said he thought the intersectionalists were his “fellow travelers,” and was more than disappointed that they carried the banner of Hamas. What he mistook was that he had started that parade, that he himself was the paragon of intersectional protestors, that he himself unwittingly held the banner for Hamas. No longer does he lead that parade, for Kamala has picked up that flag. Her sophistry - that the Hamas protestors are mostly right, that holding back Israel from committing a genocide is not antisemitic - that sophistry hides her support for the real Iranian political movement to commit genocide. “Never again” has become “Once again the Jews are doing this or that …” Always an excuse for persecuting the Jews - from the 1290 expulsion from England to the Nazi Holocaust. Always the sophistry, always the excuses. And again. And again. And again. And, once again. In the offing of that casuistry, I hear the rumblings of the Enabling Act of 1933, the German legislative act of 1933, that was the prelude to 1938’s Kristallnacht. America is not 1930’s Germany. Our history, which defines us, differentiates us. If only we remember it. Once again.
