I’m a big fan of The Free Press. I just finished reading today’s (Aug 11th) NYT article about Beri Weiss. It’s clear the NYT doesn’t like Beri and believes it’s time for the MSM to take her down. It’s a shame the article doesn’t have a comment section; it would have been fun to see readers' reactions.

OH MY G-D BARI WEISS!!!!!! The New York Times article about you today, 8/11/24 was GREAT! The only sore-tooth-ping I felt was I doubt you ever walked "sheepishly" past any of those dip$#!+s! The article makes you a genuine superstar. I am so proud of my own Squirrel Hill meydele!!! You have no idea how much I hated the legacy press until Common Sense came along. We were all stuck reading the smarmy mishegas of the self-convinced half-witted Foucault educated bad faith liars, oops that is a bit too brat. I mean Ivy League progressive journalists. You and your WIFE are wonderful. Keep bringing more Jewish genius, and little Jewish geniuses into the world.

I'm a Free Presser because I had pretty much given up on the partisan mainstream media. Also, I don't have cable and do not get any news that way. Here in Canada, the government has also enacted a tax (or fee) on social media companies like Facebook; for example, if they publish any news, so they don't. The only place left to get news is from YouTube (so far) and from subscriptions such as the Free Press. I am also a Free Presser, partially because of Bari Weiss. I trust her and admire her moxie.

One of the reasons I stay with the Free Press after being subscribed for a while now is that I enjoy the comment section and varying opinions and views. The commenters here are (mostly) respectful and insightful.

I also enjoy the mix of reporters you have employed, which I feel gives a more well-rounded and accurate representation of the actual thoughts and feelings of the unwashed masses (people like me) than, say, CNN or Fox News (just two of many), which are heavily partisan.

So, please keep doing what you're doing, and please resist any temptation to be partisan despite how upset or disgusted you are with the opposing forces. News publications like this are our only salvation in these divided times in the West. I thank you all.

It was the deleveraging of the Yen carry trade that broke the market for….one day. I wonder what else chatGPT gets wrong 🧐

Most of the commentariat seem to want a balanced platform, as do I. Maybe a good way to satisfy that is to have Point and Counterpoint articles published together, as well as Balanced articles that honestly and objectively articulate both sides of an issue.

Or remove unnecessarily biased language. Like in the latest article about JD Vance's "Cat Lady" comments from Kat Rosenfeld. She writes about Vance's, "... now NOTORIOUS interview."

There is absolutely no need for that adjective which is loaded with bias. Who is the interview notorious to? Woke fools? Communist a-holes? Useful Idiots in the media? Anyone else but them?

A good editor who cares about being balanced, not Oliver Wiseman who is a committed Leftist, would have removed that unnecessary word to bring balance to the article.

It's stuff like that. Of course, Bari can't see it, or doesn't care. However, it's losing her the people who originally supported her when everything with the NYT went down. People who do care about balance. Not just conservatives and Republicans, but moderates, centrists, and even liberals. The FP is becoming Leftist under Oliver Wiseman's direction, and it's a betrayal of the Common Sense subscribers.

I am a 60+ trades worker (tool & die) who has lurked here since last winter; I only became a paid subscriber a couple months ago.

I admire Bari for calling out the bias at her old employer, and hopes she continues along that same path.

As far as the writers; I was ready to write-off Peter Savodnik, after his ridiculing of the "Trump Veepstakes", but then he rebounded (at least with me) with one of the few honest accounts, about "Gas Lighting The Public on Kamala the Border Czar"

You can never have enough columns by Salena Zito, Abagail Shrier, Batya Ungar Sargon, or Niall Ferguson, IMO

Great publication. You do not care who you offend and you do not subscribe to a narrative. A breath of fresh air in stark contrast to the legacy media organizations. Keep doing what you do — and, as you grow, remember not to lose sight of what drove you to start this project in the first place. Do not let growth erode your soul.

Can "Freedom" exist without corresponding "Responsibility"? Should the Founders have added a "Bill of Responsibilities"?

Expand full comment

I may be wrong, but I believe that in the days when the Constitution was written, being responsible was just assumed to be common sense. Even when I was young, taking responsibility for my actions was assumed and expected. It seems to be more of a modern thing; maybe in the last twenty years or so, people have abandoned the idea that they are responsible for their actions. We see it in the law (my career) where every bad action they commit is not their fault because they were poor, or of a certain race, or abused as children, or bullied, or using drugs, or drunk or any number of excuses. We see in the school system today where a student's bad behaviour or marks are not their fault, and the parents blame the teachers or someone else's kids. The school also will not fail anyone these days and make them repeat the year, which was common in my days as a student. Students were also suspended or expelled for bad behaviour. There were real-world consequences to being a lazy or an asshole in school.

I know you were referring more to the Constitution and the responsibilities of a people or a nation, but I feel that individual responsibilities go hand in hand with the greater responsibilities of a country and that the elected will behave as they do in their personal lives when dealing with matters of state. Basically, if a man or a woman can't take responsibility or manage their own lives, their home or business, then they have no business running a city, a state, or, God forbid, a country.

You don't seem to understand the concept of the Bill of Rights, which are rights inherent to every human being from birth, endowed to us by our Creator.

Nothing is to interfere with them. They are not given to us by any government, thus no, your theoretical "Bill of Responsibilities" is anathema to the concept of the Bill of Rights.

People have their freedom taken away from them all the time when they abdicate their responsibilities, whether to God, or rules of law. For example, prison sentence, or death sentence for breaking the law. Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness may be God given, but you can bet he holds people to account...one way, or another.

If there's an Alaskan on staff - I want more Iditarod coverage! Some of the attacks on the race by animal rights groups are right up the Free Press's alley.

I thought it was only me thinking the Free Press had gone down hill. I haven’t been enjoying each article as I used to devour them, so to speak. Glad to hear I’m not alone. I think I’d prefer fewer and better articles than the spread we are getting. Will see.

Where is our conservative voice, Walter Kirn? I do see TFP starting to lean left. There are others that are more unbiased like Walter's buddy Matt Taibi over at Racket. TFP should compare with Racket and you will see what we are all seeing from us on the right.

My thoughts on the journalists and the reporting of "The Free Press" , the left vs right, liberal vs conservative angles the commenters are addressing,(complaining about). What I think most of us would like to see is balance in reporting a story, not a narrative of one side or the other, but the old model of "point/counterpoint " reporting. It seems that ,gone are the days when journalists could/would lay out the full story in a way that facts are stated , are given straight forward , fully debated within their article(story) This approach does take more time and effort, but in my opinion is necessary. Like the old TV news show, "Point-Counter Point" that would debate current topics and issues. I always found this informative and allowed me to shape my opinion on many topics. As a society we must go (back) to find ways to inform voters and create a knowledge based electorate. AND THAT is why the Constitution gives (and guarantees ) a"THE FREE PRESS" !

Should be a clarion call to all Journalists, all Investigative Reporters to do your Job and SERVE AMERICA AND THE AMERICAN CITIZENS!!🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

"Point-Counterpoint with an article"....right on. Takes more time (and thought)...probably why it's scarce...maybe add: It doesn't pay as well.

many commentators did a good job stating their cases and what they have liked or not from the FP.

I have been in a year or so, not sure. Now, or recently, I too have felt a more left or liberal lean in the editorials. O Wiseman is by far, the farthest left. He is entitled to be that way, in his personal life. At the FP he needs to be objective, and balanced. His comments as noted, usually portray Trump or conservatives in a negative light, and to me, more of a personal animosity or dislike of those folks.

There is much good that Trump did and will do for me and America, and it needs to be honestly communicated. As others have said, I grit my teeth when backhanded compliments are given to Trump, almost as throwing a bone his way.

And conversely , he lobs platitudes to the dem liberals with little objective view of their true actions.

Israel and the hamas war generates similar feelings for me. It should only be one way, the Israeli way.

my two cents

not sure how long I will continue, but do enjoy the comment section and most of those writing them.
