American governments have been attempting to silence opposing views for generations. There is nothing new here. And what Taibbi conveniently omits in his urgency is that the 'victims' of US government overreach had every right to refuse their requests to censor (cue the NYT in the Pentagon Papers saga of fifty plus years ago). But every platform from Facebook to Twitter caved. As is their right. But they didn't have to. Perhaps Matt should have written more about the spinelessness of the American press, never mind American political parties. Free expression is alive and well in America, it just needs to be exercised.

The American Press is far from "spineless"!
They are on a dedicated, and now desperate, and ultimately failing mission to restore their former power and influence over the "great unwashed".

And the victors are yet to be determined.
