The H1B debate is a good one to have in the public. People will have different experiences and different perspectives. Lets see how the decision (in Trump's hands) settles out before we start disucssing a 'MAGA Civil War'. And to those who are rooting for failure by the new administration, stop trying to create true division where none exists. BTW, I think many conservatives have been clear- America needs a continuing influx of smart immigrants. Some even stating that every foreign student who get a degree in the US should be given a green card along with their diploma. Expanding (and improving) the H1B is good policy.
It is beyond me why this disagreement is seen as some sort of big deal. It simply is not. It is a good debate to have, and soon we will have an actual president and a functioning Congress who will decide the outcome. My money is on Musk and Trump (who appear to see eye-to-eye on this), and whatever "MAGA" is, it will be fine. It is just a bit disappointing to see The Free Press buying into this attempt to whip up a fake fuss over it all.
Pay them less? No, employers cannot legally pay H-1B employees less than the required wage under U.S. law. If you’re alleging illegal behavior, it would be interesting to to make your case in the article.
Employers must pay the higher of two wage standards:
1. Prevailing Wage: This is the average wage paid to similarly employed workers in the specific occupation and geographic area.
2. Actual Wage: This is the wage paid by the employer to other employees with similar experience and qualifications in the same role at the same location.
Employers are required to certify this wage compliance when filing a Labor Condition Application (LCA) with the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) and must provide documentation to prove compliance. Failure to meet these requirements can result in penalties, including fines, back wages, and potential disqualification from hiring H-1B workers in the future
I disagree that this is some sort of intellectual disagreement that is going to split MAGA, this was a naked powerplay by someone who wanted to kneecap Musk and DOGE for their own personal/political reasons having little to do with H1-Bs. I think the left wants nothing more than for this to be about racism, but the reality is less dramatic.
IMO, this is another manifestation of Trump's chaotic leadership style that tends to have subordinates compete with each other. It's a shame that instead of uniting to fix this country before we go bankrupt, all we get are greedy sociopaths stabbing each other in the back behind the scenes.
“The H-1B program… is beloved by tech companies because they can bring in highly educated, technically proficient engineers, and pay them less than they would pay an American doing the same job.” - it is so irresponsible and shows poor reporting to state this as a fact and not an opinion, which is what it is.
I would like to thank school boards, teachers unions, uninvolved dads and helicopter moms for making this debate necessary. One modest proposal may be to require a child to be able to complete a welfare application prior to graduating.
When I was in the eighth grade my academic future was mapped out as a life of ease. Then those damned Russians launched satellites into space, and President Eisenhower announced that federal money was linked to teaching math and science. This ruined my early teenage academic dreams, but I survived. However, I still long for a double major in romantic poets and early twentieth century art. ;-}
To quote the great American philosopher Walt Kelly and his alter ego, Pogo, “We have met the enemy, and he is us”.
It seems that there are a lot of inflamatory words in the above story. It would be preferable to quote individuals that are trying to solve the problem vs. quotes from a far right influencer who does not speak for the United States. This will not bring people together to solve problems but will again cause division. I see people in the party trying to have conversations. Conversations are allowed to happen. Let's solve problems.
The anti-Indian rhetoric of some of those on the alt right, see, e.g., Laura Loomer, is just naked racism, full stop. I hope, but don’t expect that, President Trump will do a Sister Souljah on them.
"In the end, the debate was less about immigration policy or about whether or not H-1B can be reformed, which of course it can. It was about more fundamental disagreements brewing inside the right..."
"Its detractors point to a series of ways the program has been abused over the years. The good-faith ones include Nicole Shanahan, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s former vice-presidential candidate, a Silicon Valley lawyer, and, notably in this case, Sergey Brin’s ex-wife. “The system we’ve constructed with H-1B visas, whether we like it or not, incentivizes people to come here and serve as essentially indentured servants for Big Tech, taking on the tough, grueling jobs that few here in America are excited to perform at the current suppressed salaries.” she wrote on X. The program, she concluded, needed to be overhauled."
Yes, absolutely, that system needs to be overhauled. H-1B visa holders should be working for their employers, not the headhunting firm that got them into the country. That is not the American dream, but rather a scam run on those seeking that dream.
There were serious and substantive counterpoints made against the expansion of the H1B program that consisted of much more than the petty racism of a loon like Laura Loomer and PatriotLover696969. It’s truly unfortunate you decided not to highlight those, but instead the rantings of an anonymous and ridiculously small contingent of trolls. I felt like I was reading a CNN or MSNBC article. I subscribe here for better than that.
Some individuals are being "quoted" who do not represent the true issues around the argument. Shanahan and Weinstein are pretty spot on. the H2B is a wage suppression / cost savings / indentured servant mechanism. The number of "highly talented" individuals on H1B are likely measured in the close to zero measurement. The "civil war" - quite hyperbolic - is a needed discussion of different ideas and approaches to hopefully get to a better spot. That spot is that H1B are few and VERY expensive. After all - if it's for the "cream of the crop", then cost should be little issue.

Bannon and Loomer are and have always been straight up racists. Why give them attention?

Uh, no, Joe.
Uh, yes, Joe hit the nail on the head.
Uh, no, Joe didn't. There is a problem with the H-1B program, but a "civil war"? No.

Loomer sounds like a "double agent". Perfect rhetoric to tear apart a case either way.
Sounds like Joe wrote another article aimed at his audience of Jen Rubin and Liz Cheney.

I agree. Wake up Bari, this is not THE FREE PRESS you want or we need.

Joe, already over. But keep typing away.
