Biden did a great service to Carter on his way out. He supplanted Carter as the worst president in our lifetime. Any sneering remarks about rapist, or misogynist about Trump fall on deaf ears since JFK, and Clinton molested their own pages while in office and we were told it was none of our business. Don’t believe all the liberal hype about 45 soon to be 47 because most of us want to vote for a thinking president, not a walking corpse wound up by a nameless staff of idiots.
Remind me what Carter did that made him such a bad president? The Camp David Accords? Removing price controls from oil and natural gas? Ending the government’s ability to set prices for the trucking, railroad and airline industries? Reducing the Debt/GDP ratio to its lowest level in the post WW II period? Ending runaway inflation of 15 years with appointing Volker and then allowing him the independence to do his job? What did he DO that made him such a bad president?
Interesting how people here think there's something wrong with Joe Biden but don't seem to think that there's anything wrong with convicted felon rapist Donald Trump.
Wasn’t a rape conviction or allegation. Get your facts straight. Nobody on the planet other than Trump would’ve been charged with those “felonies.” That’s part of why he was elected. Not OK to use the judicial system in an attempt to manipulate an election.
Yes, Leighton Woodhouse writes that LA was "built to burn" -- but he does NOT argue that "progressive politicians aren't to blame". In fact, he says: "Certainly, there is blame to go around—Mayor Karen Bass shouldn’t have been in Ghana; we need to know why the fire hydrants went dry", etc. His point was that, with the knowledge about LA's natural burnability, much more could have been, and was NOT, done. The story was NOT a big "oh well".
Joe Biden: He was never an exceptional Senator. Somewhere between 2012 & 2020 he became demented. The power brokers knew this & used him/it to their advantage. It's possible & probable that Biden doesn't fully appreciate the consequences of his actions. Since the buck stops at his desk he will be held responsible. I don't think he'll replace James Buchanan as our worse President but Biden deserves the second place "Prize"! What he has done may not be reversible & certainly will have long term, negative consequences. Until he finally walks out the door he'll continue to be destructive.
Joe Biden had an extremist presidency, but I'm not sure Biden was ever an ideological extremist. I'm not defending him. I'm just questioning if he was president in more than name.
First, Biden was put forward as a "moderate" candidate because the Democrats needed a moderate that non-leftists could be comfortable voting for in order to defeat Trump. Biden himself is (and was for most of his political career) a cipher who would go with whatever winds put/kept him in power ... which, of course, we know now he and his family used to grow rich selling political influence, or at least the promise of influence.
Second, Biden was obviously not fit to be president when he was elected from his basement, and he just got worse over time. The Biden administration was in many ways Obama's third term, or at least Biden administration policy was run by a cabal of well-left-of-center former Obama staffers and, on some things, Jill Biden. I'm not sure how much day-to-day influence Obama actually wielded, but I would bet it was as much as he wanted. You know his calls were always taken and taken seriously. Biden had an extreme presidency because policy in his administration was controlled by unelected, diehard, ideological lefties, without the check of having to answer to the voters.
Finally, on reflection, this isn't such a big surprise. Sen. Dianne Feinstein was essentially the same or worse than Biden for at least her last term, if not longer. Remember the Maoist-like character assassination of Justice Brett Kavanaugh? That originated in her office, which was also run by leftwing ideologues unanswerable to the voters. while she was to far gone to even understand what was happening.
So it's a lot worse than Biden having an extreme presidency. Unelected progressive ideologues continue to prove their contempt for American voters, for fairness or justice, and for our democratic system.
"Eventually, the path ahead of you becomes narrowed by the choices behind you; eventually, you become accountable not just to yourself but to others, too. And if some shimmering possibility presents itself, be it another lover or another life, the truly heroic thing to do is to understand the difference between a possibility and a promise, between a fantasy of what might have been and the deep-rooted truth of the life you’ve chosen—and to gently close the door."
Wow, Kat has done it again. Great article, powerful closing. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Kat. Keep it up.
Babygirl was, in my mind, had little to do with workplace politics or women's equality, or any other, loftier issue.. The film, in my view, was a weak remake of the much more sensitive 9 1/2 Weeks (Mickey Rourke and Kim Basinger) of 1986. Both films were about dominance and masochism and humiliation and control -- in sex. But the Rourke and Basinger characters actually cared for one another and the Basinger character was at least likeable. Kidman's character was not likeable. The man and woman in the story may as well have been animals in heat. An ugly film ...
Biden is doing his farewell address on Wednesday because he needs to avoid the media the last few days in office. The remaining pardons for his crime family and others will come probably late on Friday to avoid the news cycle. The resulting media coverage would ordinarily hit on Monday, but by then, legacy media will be consumed - CONSUMED - with covering Trump's second inauguration. He'll be able to avoid facing any media between his worst abuses of office and his departure.
Leighton misses a major point about fires in California. How do the fires start? Lightning is relatively rare along the coastline of California, especially compared to the mountains. Man causes these fires, either by accident or on purpose. It may be part of natural California ecosystem, but fires that are caused “naturally” are rare. And if given the proper resources, man can prevent and fight fires to minimize property damage.
CA Rep Tom McClintock's piece in The WSJ explains fire history in CA. Fire is natural part of 'the hot furnace.' These cycles are long-term (hundreds of years) events. Since Europeans have been in CA changes in grazing, logging, fire prevention subdued some fires. Policy changes limiting these added fuel. When mother nature hits big: volcanoes, tsunamis, fires, pandemics, earthquakes, there is little man can do.
That’s a good article. I grew up in Santa Barbara county and backpacked as a kid all over the Sierra Mountains. I remember seeing old and new signs of forest fires all over where we hiked. Not so many signs in the coastal mountain ranges. But, McClintock is right about how long fire has been a part of the ecosystem there. It’s amazing to think the Lodgepole pine evolved so that its pine cones open up and release their seeds during a fire. I don’t think we can prevent damage from disasters, like fires and earthquakes, but they can be minimized.
Superb comments one and all . At TFP you can get a repulsive article like Leightons and learn something from the commenters . That is because Bari and Nellie appeal to scorned liberals; like us . Bari saw a need and filled it . I am very happy for her and Nellie. Both of whom were absolutely demonized by the NYT. TFP is just a wonderful success story!
I would not watch his farewell speech if it were the last known address on the planet. Sorry Joe, you’re despicable in so many ways, the top of the mammoth pyramid being Afghanistan, all those careless deaths. Get out and stay out - good riddance motherfucker.
Speaking of open issues between Hamas and Israel, one is identified as Israel's "willingness to end the war."
As I read that line, I modified it to 'Israel's willingness to end the war *that it did not start but was forced into it by the barbarity of the Oct 7 terror*.'
“ Progressive” is a very misleading oxymoron unless one considers racing off a cliff “ progress”.

Now THAT comment is truly laughable.
Did no one tell the Venezuelans you can vote your way into socialism but you have to shoot your way out?

As usual, another 48 hour speed run of The Free Press' BS being debunked.

Joe Biden was NEVER a moderate, a progressive wolf in sheep's clothing. How stupid were all the sheeple!

Couldn't agree more and this is coming from someone who is a Libertarian, not a scorned liberal.
