But it’s not a movement. Suzy really blew this out of proportion in her haste to ridicule it. Hurkle-durkle is a fun, silly name for a way to spend one’s free time that has existed probably since humans had beds. Maybe even before. It’s not something one does in lieu of work. As I said above, “those celebrating hurkle-durkling are talking about a Saturday morning here and there.” Think of it as sleeping in - that weekend luxury we all know - except you’re awake. What busy, money-making thing do you think people should be doing on a weekend morning?

Btw, you can find out if all these youngsters are actually lying around sucking on the government teet by checking the employment numbers like I did. heres a chart that shows much lower unemployment among young people today than in the previous 33 years. Anyway!

Well, I don’t have time to dive all the way into it, but here’s a solid source saying the unemployment rate for people 25-34 is 4.7%. Higher than the older cohorts, but not exactly a generation of layabouts.

The problem is that people who are not looking for work are not counted as unemployed, they are just not measured in the labor force.

Double checking those stats right now since I just read an article that said youth employment has decreased in the past 40 years as college enrollment increased. Sigh.
