Nice hikkimori reference. The problem with the hurkle durkles is that they feel entitled to other people’s money. Tax workers to pay for the hurkle durkles’ student loans on useless degrees. Call mommy and daddy for subsidies. Self care means ordering Uber eats, binge watching Netflix, scrolling through TikTok, and mailing in your vote for democrats to give you more handouts all without leaving the house. At least your carbon emissions are low!

I’m not sure how you got from hurkle durkle to government handouts, but it was a quick jump! Where did it say that these folks are on welfare? Or that they aren’t paying their student loans anymore than someone struggling at a low-paying, out-of-bed job? Presumably, people staying in bed all day every day can do remote work, have some kind of independent financial support, or are very sick. More likely, those celebrating hurkle-durkling are talking about a Saturday morning here and there. Try it!

How do they pay their own bills? That is the only relevant question. Welfare? Or illegal activity?

They have jobs.

Maybe it was a 'quick jump' to government handouts, but in order for this to become a movement, it was a logical jump. You state it was possibly remote work financing this movement, so I sense that you didn't grasp the concept of doing nothing. Perhaps they 'have some kind of independent financial support' you posited, maybe there are vast numbers of people that have drawn this lot in life that I am not aware of. I doubt it. Lastly you wrote 'are very sick', again I think you missed the point of people deciding to lounge around and revel in sloth. Therefore money, being a necessary evil to survive (and doesn't magically appear, in my experience), has to to be provided to the Hurkle Durkle acolyte. It's entirely logical to assume government handouts would be considered.

But it’s not a movement. Suzy really blew this out of proportion in her haste to ridicule it. Hurkle-durkle is a fun, silly name for a way to spend one’s free time that has existed probably since humans had beds. Maybe even before. It’s not something one does in lieu of work. As I said above, “those celebrating hurkle-durkling are talking about a Saturday morning here and there.” Think of it as sleeping in - that weekend luxury we all know - except you’re awake. What busy, money-making thing do you think people should be doing on a weekend morning?

Btw, you can find out if all these youngsters are actually lying around sucking on the government teet by checking the employment numbers like I did. heres a chart that shows much lower unemployment among young people today than in the previous 33 years. Anyway!

[this comment is supposed to come after the following comment - annoying]

Well, I don’t have time to dive all the way into it, but here’s a solid source saying the unemployment rate for people 25-34 is 4.7%. Higher than the older cohorts, but not exactly a generation of layabouts.

The problem is that people who are not looking for work are not counted as unemployed, they are just not measured in the labor force.

Double checking those stats right now since I just read an article that said youth employment has decreased in the past 40 years as college enrollment increased. Sigh.

Good point.

Self care should mean paying for it yourself.

Who says they aren’t? Seriously. I didn’t read that. Does this generation receive more government subsidies than others?

Slackers never pay for anything. They demand everything for no apparent reason. Toss them to the curb and them force them to grow up, and take care of their own business, all by themselves.

People who sleep in on their day off are slackers who should be tossed to the curb? When did everyone get this weird?
