"It wasn’t until Donald Trump that it was legitimized."

This essay was a fine job of nut-picking. There were plenty of nuts and weirdos long before Trump, and any disinterested observer can spot them everywhere in the fringes of both partys. Ascribing the general character of a party to the delusions in its fringes makes as much sense as the weirdos do.

River Page really should have read Hillbilly Elegy before he wrote his critique of it. Vance has often criticized Congress for doing nothing to help those trapped in the drug & depression cycle. Quoting Vance at a senate hearing: “If you think about addiction, in some cases it’s a straightforward question of medical treatment. But it’s also related to chaos and trauma in certain families. That’s in turn related to the fact that economic opportunities and jobs are harder to come by. If we’re going to make any headway on these problems, we have to tackle each simultaneously.” Vance does not blame the victim, he simply suggests it is a multi faceted problem for which the addict shares some responsibility. Which any competent addiction counselor will agree with.

Once again the left misses the entire point because their politics are identity based and not mission based. Just like DEI, the left are becoming dinosaurs.

So Savodnik cites a conservative radio host, MTG who everybody knows is loopy, and some obscure North Carolina lieutenant governor as evidence that the GOP is paranoid. Talk about reaching. I suggest he check out the progressive wing of the Democrat party for fearmongering and paranoia. And maybe, just maybe, given recent events their paranoia is justified.

And I agree 100 percent with that quote by Charlie Kirk about liberal American Jews and their mistaken belief that they are not considered white by the left.

Poor Savodnik. Poor Rupa. Poor anyone else at the fp who bemoans as racist and redneck the inevitable but benign in-house disagreements that exist in a Big Tent Republican party --- as if anything could compare with the antisemitic cancer metastasizing throughout the DEI party of warped and warring Leftists.

"It was Trump, as everyone knows, who promulgated the lie that Barack Obama wasn’t born in the United States. "

Sorry, it was Hillary. Trump merely picked up the useful baton.

Hey Peter Savodnik: I'm Jewish and I'd rather take my chances with the party that supports Israel as opposed to the one that wants to restrain them from going after their attackers (the same party that criticizes campus disruption but not the content of "Globalize the Intifada" protests).

Sure there are some fringe anti-Semitic nuts on the right, but very few of them are members of Congress.

The last few articles I've read here, SUCKED!! The cheap shots at Republicans just keep coming as if the crimes, murders and destruction caused by left-wing politicians without guardrails and their oh-so compassionate voters can be justified by pointing to some unknown right-wing wack. Very smart journalism. Thank you. Oh and is this Instagram? I really could care less about self-aggrandizing pictures of expensive vacations and second homes.

Well good riddance if the "Christian nationalist" and "white identity" right can't abide Asian-American Republicans. Not a new thing. As for "foreign gods," there is one God, just different paths. I hope the Republicans really get them going with a Bollywood dance number at the victory party if Trump wins....

"A Republican Party without guardrails" I've got news: It's not paranoia if they really are plotting against you. From before he was elected in 2016, the FBI was plotting against Trump. The "resistance movement" tried to destroy his presidency. But the Democrats were more direct: impeaching Trump twice, then locking up the mostly peaceful Capitol demonstrators, slamming many in solitary for months or years. Then, distorting our justice (sic) system with multiple contrived and phony prosecutions. The Democrats are not "without guardrails," they are liars, thugs, and traitors.

“Nativist” right…..I imagine that’s the genteel way to describe them instead of the R word.

You are right and that’s why I’ve lumped Charlie Kirk in with Tucker Carlson and Candace Owen’s. Someone stole their brain.

Showing a real grasp of the issues. You have an unusual view of what a moderate view really is.

I’m a Libertarian, my 2 sons age 38 & 27 are voting Trump because they cannot afford their lives- I can’t convince them otherwise. They have kids to feed, one has a business the other now can’t afford to buy a house- they are pissed. I’m voting Kennedy, they are voting Trump. I think there are a lot of kids like mine.

I am a libertarian and I'm voting Trump because he has shrunken the regulatory state, reduced taxes (taxes are theft), put excellent justices on SCOTUS, stands up for the border (an ownership and rule of law issue), understands that global warming has little to do with human activity, and puts America first because he is Prez of the USA, not France, India, Russia, etc.
