My grandparents came over in early 1900’s. Someone had to vouch for you. You could not just come into America. And you had to pass some screenings. My grandfather failed the health exam and was separated from his family at age 6. He and his mother had to sail to England to get treatment and then they sailed back and were allowed in.
After my family was settled this is how they brought additional family over. My grandfather, his father and his 2 brothers worked and saved money. When they brought a family over they had secured an apartment for the family, a job for the father ( meaning someone in the family got him a job ) and had saved enough money for the family to live for one year. After that, the family was on their own.
People gave to work and make their dream true. They didn’t come for a handout

I'm currently building the shelter mentioned in the article. Very few Venezuelan's on site. The vast majority are African or Middle Eastern, and Muslim. Which was interesting placement considering Hassidic Williamsburg is about three blocks away. My own workers, who are immigrants themselves, are not happy about the situation and resent the migrants who walk up and down the block all day, steal scooters, rob people at the subway stations, ask the same business owners for jobs all day long. I'm not anti-immigrant, but this is stupid. There just aren't enough no/low skill jobs for these people. It's not like we have factories anymore that can absorb them. Can't work in construction without having invested hundreds of dollars and several days taking safety courses. Can't work in fast food unless you're already worth the $15/hour minimum wage before you walk in the door. We're going to end up with a lot of unhappy men milling around that can't find work.

In the state where I live they have announced that an illegal immigrant can attend any state college or university for free if they graduate high school. I have friends who are first generation Americans that are working and saving for their kids education and no one is helping them. The thing is that if you are a middle class American with a two income household- your child will most likely have to attend cheaper universities or be saddled with loans or deplete their life savings to send their kid to school. There is a pressure on these kids to attend smaller state schools or tech schools which are less expensive and they still come out with loans. Plus they have to pay taxes for people who came here illegally to go to colleges their own kids can’t afford to attend. This system is morally broken

Twenty something years ago, the mayor of Lewiston, Maine(site of the recent mass shooting) asked Somalis not to continue coming to his city. He told them that the city’s social services were at the breaking point...and was vilified in the press and demonstrators descended on Lewiston. It’s a long story but the same story. Lewiston is/was a small city(guessing 30k) and the number of immigrants was a much larger percentage of their population than the numbers in NYC.
