I agree, Dan, although I would put it differentlly. Believing in one's own victimhood weakens your ability to deal with the situation. Oh, poor me, is not a posture that propels one forward. Doesn't really matter how legitimate one's complaints are. Actually, legitimacy makes them more powerful, which is a bad thing. You can look back later, once the years have passed, and maybe you'll even have good advice to share. But when you're young, and need to make a life for yourself, you have to focus forward. And that sometimes means wearing blinders to your own past.
