I was surprised to learn elsewhere that, despite the high percentage of military veterans in Israel, their government's gun control scheme is very strong. This has a very direct impact on Hamas' success last weekend. I have to imagine they'd have thought twice about this style of attack if every Israeli home contained military-like firearms. I hope Israeli citizens immediately demand from their govt the same protection of the natural right to self-defense that we enjoy here in the U.S.A. It's unquestionably a deterrent to foreign actors who wish to harm you.
