I have to say I am learning much from this newsletter..thank you. Defunding police isn’t an answer…adding more support services makes sense. Gun law changes would also help

She can afford private security? Could she if she weren’t using other people’s money? This whole thing is a travesty. I don’t understand how people can see the statistics of unarmed shootings and think it’s worse than the rising murder rates in these suffering communities. Why such an arrogant commitment to lies? You put up the political signs and yet ignore the real problems. Such cowardice. The only angry passion these types have is when another white person calls them out for it. Then they act as if they want you dead.

"Gun Violence"

I live in a very sparsely populated county in Michigan. It's also very poor. I'd wager that most every household has at least one firearm, or many more. It's a way of life.

Yet, shootings and homicides are extremely rare here.

I'm tired of people blaming inanimate objects or hard knocks for murder. There is no excuse.

What about Cori Bush's own constituents in St. Louis? We don't need to travel to Oakland to see the hypocrisy at play here.

St. Louis has the highest per capita murder rate in the U.S.

So who needs the security?

I grew up and have lived in high crime neighborhoods... thankfully the police responded quickly and swiftly whenever I needed them. I cannot imagine this defunded police living. What is worse, I cannot believe the folks calling for this care at all about their communities, if they did care, wouldnt they listen? Politics is a dirty game.

Why do cities like Oakland and Philly (where I Live) allow open air 24/7 drug markets ? Are the police compromised by internal corruption and fear of retribution ? Dirty Cops are not turned in (Remember what happened to Serpico). Realistically The Gun Violence is The Drug Gangs (like the Mob did) fighting over money and corners. And the cops look the other way.....day after day.

Bari you should dig into this "unsolvable" problem......

This essay just has it wrong: the research supports crime prevention, not policing. As I wrote on my own Substack in response, "Opponents of police defunding want you to believe that criminals have been emboldened, both by Black Lives Matter rhetoric and politicians speaking out against police funding. The research argues that this is a lie. As Beckett and Clayton write, “Community groups say that the pandemic forced them to shutter prevention programs and created huge challenges for the work of violence interrupters, who rely on close relationships and in-person interventions with people at risk of shooting or being shot.” You can read the rest of it here:

A couple of things come to mind after reading this piece again.

First, if you were reading news from any sources in this country from any source - MSM, Fox, even Substacks - of the the last month at least if not more, you would think that there are maybe only a handful of politicians in this country. The leading one of course is the one from the Bronx, and virtually every media outlet, every politician, every Twitter account, every pundit seems to be dancing to her tune. Then there are her minions, including the one mentioned here, and maybe Cuomo, for a bit at least (who was perhaps swept out of the way to make room for her gubernatorial run?). I can't think of any example in history of someone with less substance who was elevated to such extent.

Secondly, if someone is to come up with a proposal to redirect some money from the police budgets, or even better from the vast foreign aid spending directed at "nation building", or from our outrageous military spending to do the following:

- provide no interest loans to everyone in need and especially to people of color in need for things like home building, home renovations, home purchase

- no interest business loans supporting entrepreneurs of color and others in need

- scholarships so that students in need and in particular students of color can have access to any educational program - private, religious, Waldrof, Montessory, whatever is out there that fits their needs and gifts

- funds to bring the best available teachers to any public schools serving these populations

- to ensure that no public housing is built in areas of schools with more than 40% of poverty rate

- to ensure that no area of any large city has a poverty rate more than 10% of the city average

- free and quality child care for all

- free quality childcare

- encourage tech companies to come up with "pipeline" programs staring in kindergarten to boardroom as a way to hire local talent and phase out H1B visa programs

- incentives to restaurant, bars, coffee shops to open locations in less served/currently unserved neighborhoods

- increase walkability - want to stop drive-bys in certain areas? get rid of cars

That is something I would stand for.

This article just tore at my heart. Particularly the last sentence “ ” He just wants to figure out how to keep his family and his friends alive.”.

Sounds like "Common Sense". Thank you for writing an honest article on this issue. It seems like we are more and more being asked to not believe things we see with our own eyes. People need safe neighborhoods and kids need excellent schools. Democratic leaders in cities like Oakland exploit their residents and offer no solutions, just exploitation. Sad.

Why are so many of the defund the police protestors shown in video and photos young white people? Most, if not all of whom, I'd wager have never had a police encounter. Lenin called these types useful idiots.

Two comments: 1) there are few things more vile than a white person referring to a black person as a token or an Uncle Tom ( especially when they grew up with privileges that the vast majority of black and white Americans could only dream of) , and 2) activists who seek to defund police departments never seem to find the time to focus on the utter failure of inner city schools to educate poor kids ( education arguably being the best way to improve the lives of those children).

As the song goes "There's no business like community activist business!" Bet there are talent agents in LA who tell their clients "I got no work for you, but you can run for a mayor of Oakland or SF, or start your won activist gig. Here are some lines you can practice!"

I will keep quoting Lester Freamon until I'm blue in the face - if you want to see the big picture, follow the freakin' money! For example, recent U of Colorado study showed that Denver spends between 40k-100k per year per homeless person, twice the cost of a one bedroom apartment. Recent levy in Seattle, approved by less that 40% of the turnout, will have all homeowners pay for, among other things, a group that spends 2 million paying guys to walk around a mall and "prevent young kids of color from shoplifting". There was a recent story in NYT on how this works globally, looking into Obama's program to prevent migration from Guatemala that spent 2 billion paying community groups from suburban Maryland to make apps and do things like that.

Infiltrate a group, or start a new one, get on the trough and see how the money flows: who is it coming from, who is it going to.

Also, if you look into the money, you'll see the bigger picture. For example, an opposition leader i Serbia has recently presented "Green New Deal for Serbia". His funding mostly comes from Soros and from Friedrich Ebert Foundation (recently renamed something Green something). In other words, we can talk about the trees, but I'd rather discuss the forest.

This is a global thing, with global repercussions.

Lastly, a fun piece of news" Finnish archeologists have recently uncovered a 1,000 years old remains of a person they believe was a non-binary individual and was a revered member of the society, which proves that ancient civilizations had high respect for non-binary people.
