Jimmy Carter is proof that, for leaders in a democratic republic, character is NOT destiny. He may have been a “good man,” whatever that means. But his presidency was a failure. His foreign policy was humiliating and disastrous for US interests. He created the template for the even worse foreign policy disasters of Obama and Biden. No amount of Sunday school teaching and Habitat for Humanity home building can make up for the damage he caused.

I voted for Carter cuz Rolling Stone Magazine liked him. Gave away the Panama Canal, our first house was at 12.5%, we waited in line for gas in our pajamas. Last Democrat I ever voted for.

Schism? It's called debate. Only in the minds of the dogmatic left can debate become a punishable offense. The left will never understand that conservatives are a free people. We all have different views. We think for ourselves. We don't rely on your high priests and priestesses to tell us what to believe. Do us a favor. Clutch your beads and fret in private.

OH my god it is too depressing to read American publications having exactly the same discussions about immigration that we had in the UK over the last decade, and being subjected to the same snide liberal hot-takes to which we were subjected. Lines which go like: "when we open up immigration it will lead only to super-smart top-end additions to the US population", "immigration won't have any impact on the average takehome pay of US citizens" and the most heinous "immigration has no impact on house prices/shortages". Some form of each of these three liberal lines appear in the TFP column today. All I can warn US readers is that we were fed those lines in the UK up to the point that their lack of truthfulness became impossible to avoid. Mass immigration has led to the importatation of people who far from contributing are a net cost - a huge net cost - to the public purse; it has depressed working class wages; it has directly contributed to our housing crisis. I beg US conservatives not to swallow the same lines. Of course our countries are different in many respects but I can't see any reason - other than scale - that would make the US immune to what has happened here.

I can't help seeing the "civil war" within the right as a parallel to the way the progressive left pushed open borders (which betrayed the base of their party — the working class most negatively impacted by the flood of immigrants). Does anybody else see any parallel, or am I off base?

Jimmy Carter was a f*cking JEWHATER, and this slime permeated everything he did and wrote after Camp David. I hope you can access the above article, which gives detailed info. Sorry people, I am DONE with being polite about JEWHATE ( formerly, erroneously called "anti- semitism").

Biden is giving the eulogy for Carter at the National Cathedral. I’m certain we’ll see Obuma & Billary. What a gaggle. Carter was an embarrassment. At the time of his presidency my wife who was born & raised in the South said he was a good old boy cracker! It was no compliment. The U.S. is 26th in math & 10th in science. In order to compete with China we need all the help we can get. The answer isn’t DEI nor WOKE nonsense. Unless we revamp our education systems the alternative is learning Mandarin.

Our scores have always been poor compared to the rest of the world and we could never beat the Russians or the Japanese or the Germans. Definitely no chance against Chinaandindia, not to mention the excellence the Finnish school system.

But somehow we lead the world in most everything that everything that science produces and the world's best and brightest want to be here to produce it.

Much of Chinese technology was “lifted” from America. The individual who developed the Taiwanese microchip industry was an MIT graduate. He wanted to develop the industry in America but was shunned. Much of what you say is true. From 1905-1930 twenty-eight Jews in Germany were awarded the Nobel prize in science, physics, mathematics & quantum mechanics. The American medical system, particularly medical training was developed in Germany. The first antibiotic, sulfonamides were developed by the German, Domagk & the first primitive antibiotic to treat syphilis was developed by the German physician, Ehrlich.

Civil War- Exhibit 1 in why Vivk will never win an election. He's arrogance and moral superiority shows up 15 minutes before he does. The H1-B visa issue was always simple for my company as an employer. Post a notice of an opening and see who shows up. If Americans show up, they're likely to be a much easier, less costly hire. If not and someone on a visa shows up, you're in for a long expensive hassle getting them permitted to work, but you hold your nose and do it, cuz you need the position filled. Having some bureaucrat decide the merit of the applicants? What could go wrong?

Carter- It's hard to imagine Joe grew up in the '70's. That was a low point in American history regarding our self-image as a country, Anything good Carter did in office is far overshadowed by what he tried to do the the American psyche. The list it too long to rehearse here. As to being unlucky, that's laughable. He had an agenda, executed it and it failed. Plain and simple. He left office with America lower in international standing than Biden, which is no small feat. Having admirable personal traits does not a great president make.

The funniest story about Jimmy Carter, or at any rate the one that resonated with me, was the one in which his mother or grandmother (I can't remember which) told him that if he didn't want to go and work in the family field, he couldn't simply goof off: he had to sit and read a book. His reaction was, "What? If I read a book, I don't have to work in the field? Give me the book!"

That lad could grow up to be president one day.

Bringing the best and brightest from other countries is called brain drain and it is what keeps America on the bleeding edge of technology. That said, these foreigners need to assimilate and be full blooded true to our flag - Americans. They need to be throughly vetted.

As a skilled technologist, I am troubled by the renewal of H1-B visas. Job market already sucks and this will eliminate whatever little momentum we had in the middle of the year with regard to H1-B contractors not being qualified for many jobs. Not to mention salaries going down as well. Not a happy Trump supporter right now.

Carter was not "unlucky," just really, really bad. Let's not start rewriting history just because the guy died. And why would anyone car about his humanitarian exploits. It's a personal decision, but does not speak to any terrific moral courage or anything noteworthy otherwise.

I did a very cursory survey of engineering graduates internationally which proved to be unintentionally hilarious. All surveys I found had Iran at least 10th in the world (or top 5) with Israel nowhere to be found. Considering Israel is home to research and manufacturing facilities for dozens and dozens of international hi-tech companies and develops and uses cutting edge military technology and Iran isn't and doesn't, perhaps quality matters more than quantity?
