This sounds much more like a pneumonia or flu than like COVID. Southeast China has the largest collection of poultry and pigs in the world, and those domesticated animals are the natural reservoirs of such illnesses, although not SARS (which came originally from wild bats, whatever engineering it was later subjected to).
If so, then it needs to be taken seriously, but more along the lines of a flu pandemic, like 2009, 1968, or 1957. Because Hong Kong is now under CCP control, we now longer have the free flow of information about southeast China we once did.

I actually find the official narrative believable. The Seattle Children's hospital was packed to the gills in the fall of 2022 after COVID restrictions loosened. My 1 year old stayed in an exam room because they were out of normal inpatient beds. Respiratory issues from RSV, Parainfluenza, and other viruses overwhelmed the region.

It was a predictable effect of children losing their natural immunity which is developed and sustained by constant contact with other children.

BUT, of all the things that were learnable about Covid was not just about the west enjoying taking on the CCP approach to total control and unnecessary lockdown of healthy innocents and damage to our economy and culture. Learnable was the DEI time waster about the Left crying how bad it was halt travel to and from China and other nations experiencing Covid , ignoring the normal approach to public health is to quarantine the sick, not the healthy regardless of demographic characteristics such as race or residency.

I'm on day 13 of a flu with respiratory cough and congestion. It definitely feels like a double whammy. ( it's not covid or rsv).
Seems similar to what children faced here in the US in the winter of 2022 as we began to socialize more freely. That's my hope at least.
