I actually find the official narrative believable. The Seattle Children's hospital was packed to the gills in the fall of 2022 after COVID restrictions loosened. My 1 year old stayed in an exam room because they were out of normal inpatient beds. Respiratory issues from RSV, Parainfluenza, and other viruses overwhelmed the region.

They might be lying, but if so they chose a believable lie. The thing China is avoiding is that this was a predictable result of their draconian lockdowns.

Exactly what I think is going on. This is the same surge of respiratory illnesses that were seen in most Western countries in the winter season after the end of lockdowns. It was a predictable effect of children losing their natural immunity which is developed and sustained by constant contact with other children.

The antibiotic resistance, on the other hand, is concerning. But always has been.
