Update: So Sam Altman is now finally talking before Congress with the admission of AI dangers that he skirted on this podcast. Thank you Bari for giving us insight into this situation and this character.

I'll assume he's super smart in his chosen field. On any broader level he's either incredibly "evil genius" level disingenuous, or a complete ninny. "The government should run the AGI research....", "We should have constant debates about the implications and ethics, like they did on the Manhattan Project..." are just two example of statements that are both colossally dumb and deliberate (and wrong) meaningless pablum. As noted below, many of his answers sounded like ChatGPT - he knows he can say anything at all, so he just runs off at the mouth with what he takes to be soothing "reasonable man" platitudes. No-one is going to come back and check his answers. Bari, I hate to say it, but you've been had. He brings to mind another Sam of recent days, also a shyster and con-artist.

The hyperbolic statements about AI are too over the top. As was Bari's fawning over Sam.

Bari should have pressed Sam to describe the exact chain of events that would cause ALL life on earth to end -- all due to some software running on some high-speed computers. Must we really be so hyperbolic and dramatic about everything?

Great interviewing, but this is the most frightening podcast I have ever listened to. Sam Altman scares the shit out of me. He never directly answered Bari’s questions about the dangers of AI. He has created a powerful tool and skirts the real dangers and responsibilities telling us really nothing about how this can be controlled and safe for society. But he does tell us how super lucky, super privileged he is because he is super wealthy.

Sounds to me like Altman’s own AI Chat GPT wrote his answers. He avoided giving concrete answers to Bari’s questions about legitimate concerns over AI.

I am listening to this podcast and I find myself unconvinced by Mr. Altman that AI can be managed well and be so awesome. He seems very in love with his work and knows how to gently dismiss any real criticisms with his very polite tone. Not buying into AI just yet.

Neither am I. Not at all! The world needs more human connection right now, not less. I too found Sam Altman to be unconvincing and rather evasive on some of the big questions. Also, to answer one of Bari's questions at the end - I have absolutely zero desire to try ChatGTP.
